An important note

This page offers general information about how children’s dental coverage often works in Massachusetts. It is not legal, financial or benefits advice, and it does not state that any practice accepts any plan. Programs and rules change. Families should confirm coverage directly with the practice and with their plan or MassHealth.

MassHealth dental coverage for children

MassHealth is the Massachusetts Medicaid and CHIP program. Children and teens enrolled in MassHealth are generally eligible for dental benefits, which typically include preventive and many restorative services. Dental benefits for MassHealth members are administered through the MassHealth Dental Program. Its website includes a provider search tool, but listings can change, so call the practice to confirm.

Private dental plans

Many families have dental coverage through an employer or through the Massachusetts Health Connector. Plans differ in waiting periods, annual maximums, deductibles, network rules and how often cleanings and X-rays are covered. Some medical plans include pediatric dental benefits. Reading the summary of benefits or calling the member services number on the card is the best way to know.

Questions to ask the practice

  • Do you currently participate with my child’s plan or with MassHealth?
  • Are you accepting new patients with that plan?
  • What will be billed to the plan, and what might I owe?
  • Can you send a pre-treatment estimate for larger work?

Questions to ask your plan

  • How often are exams, cleanings, fluoride and X-rays covered?
  • Are sealants covered, and on which teeth?
  • Is there a waiting period or annual maximum?
  • Is orthodontic care covered, and under what conditions?

If you do not have coverage

Families without dental coverage can check eligibility for MassHealth or plans through the Massachusetts Health Connector. Community health centers in the region may offer dental services; contact them directly to confirm services and costs.
